The most common (and expensive) mistakes we see families make — and how to avoid every single one.
1. Booking too late
Waiting until the last week means paying premium rates, getting whichever truck is left, and often a rushed crew. Book 2–3 weeks ahead.
2. Choosing the cheapest quote blindly
The lowest quote almost always hides missing insurance, no packing material, and vanishing extras on move day. Cheap becomes expensive very quickly.
3. Skipping the on-site survey
Phone quotes are guesses. An on-site survey locks the price and the truck size — no 'we need a bigger truck' shocker on move day.
4. Not decluttering first
You pay to move every carton. Every unused item costs money twice — once to move, once to store at the new place.
5. Packing valuables in the truck
Jewellery, cash, laptops, passports and hard drives should always travel with you personally. Not in a carton, not in the truck.
6. Forgetting to defrost the fridge
24 hours before the move, empty and defrost the fridge. Water leaks during transit ruin cartons and wooden furniture.
7. Ignoring transit insurance
'Nothing will break' is not a plan. Basic transit insurance is 2–3% of declared value and covers accidents, theft and damage.
8. Poor labelling
Cartons labelled 'kitchen stuff' end up in the bedroom. Label every carton with room + contents + fragile status, on two sides.
9. Not photographing electronics before disconnecting
Take clear photos of every cable arrangement. Reassembly becomes a 10-minute job instead of a 2-hour puzzle.
10. Paying full advance
Never pay more than 20–25% as advance. Balance on delivery, after inspection. This one rule protects you from the majority of moving-day disputes.
